Windshield Repair vs Replacement: How to Decide
Use the damage’s size, depth and location to understand whether resin repair is safe or a new windshield is needed.
Do You Need a Repair or a New Windshield?
A chip or crack has appeared in your windshield, and you need to know whether it can be repaired before it spreads or requires new glass. This windshield repair vs replacement guide explains how the damage’s size, depth and location affect that decision. It also covers resin repair, replacement warning signs and the effect of Arizona heat. A technician should make the final call after inspecting the glass, but these checks will help you understand what you are dealing with.
Windshield Repair vs Replacement: The Triage Rules
Look at the damage from inside and outside the vehicle without pressing on it. Check how far it spreads, whether it reaches through the laminated glass and where it sits relative to the driver, windshield edge and vehicle cameras.
Size and break pattern
The Repair of Laminated Automotive Glass Standard, ANSI/AGSC/NWRD/ROLAGS 002-2022, classifies damage by type and size. Its general repair limits include bullseyes up to 1 inch in diameter, combination breaks up to 2 inches and star breaks up to 3 inches. Short cracks are 6 inches or less, while long cracks range from 6 to 14 inches. These are screening limits, not an assurance that every break within them can be repaired.
The impact pit also matters. Under the same standard, the missing surface glass at the strike point should not exceed 3/8 inch. Complex spiderwebbing, several intersecting cracks or a larger crushed impact point generally rules out resin repair.
Depth through the laminate
A windshield contains an outer glass layer, a plastic PVB interlayer and an inner glass layer. A surface break confined to the outer layer may accept resin. If the impact has torn or discolored the PVB, or the interior glass layer is cracked, replacement is normally required because resin cannot rebuild the laminate core.
Location on the glass
Damage near the bonded perimeter, directly in the driver’s view or in front of a forward-facing camera receives stricter treatment. Even a small repair can leave a faint mark or optical distortion, which may be unacceptable where the driver needs an undisturbed view or a camera reads the road ahead.
When Windshield Repair Is the Right Choice
Resin repair is most suitable for a fresh, clean break confined to the outer glass layer. Common candidates include a bullseye, simple star break, shallow chip or limited combination break that remains within the standard’s size limits and outside areas where a repair could impair visibility or camera performance.
Water, road dust, cleaners and oily residue can enter an open chip. Once contamination coats the internal surfaces, repair resin may not bond or cure evenly. Keep the break clean and dry until it can be inspected, and do not fill it with glue, nail polish or a home sealant.
What happens during resin repair
The technician examines and cleans the impact point, removing loose particles and moisture. The opening may be prepared to provide a clean path into the break. A repair bridge then uses vacuum and pressure cycles to remove trapped air and push optical-grade resin through the fissures.
Ultraviolet light hardens the resin within a few minutes, and the surface is finished smooth after curing. The aim is to stabilize the damage and improve clarity, although a slight blemish may remain. Chip repair commonly takes about 20 to 45 minutes, and the vehicle is generally ready to drive as soon as the repair is complete.
If the damage appears limited to a minor chip or ding, Yavapai County Auto Glass LLC’s mobile windshield repair service is the appropriate next step.

When Windshield Replacement Is Non-Negotiable
Some damage rules out repair even when the car still seems drivable. A crack that reaches or begins at the outer edge can weaken the bonded perimeter that retains the windshield. Replacement is also needed when an impact breaches both glass layers or damages the PVB interlayer.
Treat these signs as reasons to stop relying on resin repair:
- A crack touches the windshield’s outer edge or branches along the perimeter.
- The inner glass layer is cracked, or the laminate appears torn, cloudy or discolored.
- Several fractures intersect or form a complex spiderweb pattern.
- The damage causes glare, distortion or an obstruction in your direct view.
- A chip, crack or heavy pitting sits in the optical area used by a forward-facing ADAS camera.
- The windshield is separating from its bond or the damage threatens overall glass stability.
The driver’s primary viewing area has tighter limits than the rest of the windshield. ROLAGS defines this zone as a 12-inch-wide vertical area centered on the steering column and extending through the wiper sweep. Within it, total damage diameter cannot exceed 1 inch, and the finished repair pit is limited to 3/16 inch. A repair also should not be placed within 4 inches of another repair in that zone because the combined marks can interfere with vision.
A forward-facing camera may depend on the windshield’s exact shape, clarity and bracket placement. Damage in its sightline can distort the image used for functions such as lane support or automatic emergency braking. After camera-related glass is replaced, the system may require static or dynamic recalibration under the vehicle manufacturer’s procedure.
If a crack blocks your view, penetrates both glass layers or makes the windshield unstable, keep the vehicle off the road until it has been inspected. Our windshield replacement service covers structural damage and camera-area obstructions that rule out repair.
Why Desert Conditions Make Waiting Dangerous
Arizona temperature swings can turn a stable chip into a spreading crack. Glass expands when heated and contracts as it cools. Damage concentrates that stress at the tip of a chip or crack instead of distributing it through intact glass.
A windshield heated in direct sun may then be cooled suddenly by strong air conditioning or monsoon rain. The resulting thermal shock can extend a star leg or hairline crack several inches across the glass.
Until the windshield can be checked, park in shade or a covered area when possible. Cool the cabin gradually instead of directing maximum cold air at hot glass. Avoid slamming doors, rough roads and high-pressure car washes, and never pour cold water on a hot windshield.
Prompt attention also protects repair quality because dust and moisture inside a break can prevent a clean resin bond. For more information about likely costs and insurance questions, read our rock chip repair and replacement guide.
Mobile Service, OEM Standards and Insurance Coverage
Yavapai County Auto Glass LLC is a family-owned business with more than 10 years of industry experience. Our certified and trained technicians provide mobile windshield repair and replacement at homes and workplaces across Yavapai County. Most jobs are completed in less than an hour and are drivable when finished, but replacement adhesives have a specified safe drive-away time. We will tell you when your vehicle can return to the road.
When replacement is necessary, we install OEM-certified auto glass. This is particularly relevant when a windshield supports a forward-facing camera, rain or light sensor, or head-up display. We provide a lifetime warranty on parts and labor, excluding new road damage.
We work with all insurance companies. If a claim call is needed, you participate while we help with the process. Coverage depends on your policy: Arizona drivers do not automatically receive zero-deductible windshield replacement merely because they have auto insurance. That coverage requires the applicable optional comprehensive safety-equipment or glass endorsement.
Eligible customers with full coverage may receive up to $200 cashback on a replacement. Cashback is also available for eligible repair work within $100. For out-of-pocket work, we provide free cash quotes and match competitor prices. Confirm policy terms, deductibles and claim eligibility before work begins.
